Keep it to Yourself
Jesus warned people not to pray or do good things publicly so that you may be seen by others. But why did he give this warning?
The very nature of evil demands reassurance. Everything about evil needs reenforcement, because by its nature, it is conflicted and incomplete and needs something external for support. Evil can never find peace in itself; it is always wandering in conflict.
Although it is impossible to hide your love of the truth, (it will shine outwardly no matter what,) beware of your hidden motivations behind your actions. Most people are not even aware that they have hidden motivations, because they have been so thouroughly deceived from within. But by seeking clarity and objectivity from God, you will see what horrible things you’ve been doing for approval of others. Generosity and prayer are ways that evil can gain the approval of other phony, religious people.
This phony kindness and piety allows a deceived person to temporarily forget their guilt. The approval from others feels good, and reinforces the false self-image that says “I am good and generous and righteous.” The deceived person, surrounded by other deceived people, falls deeper into the deception–creating a stronger and stronger fear of self-awareness and greater spiritual insight. Their so-called friends now repeat the lie along with them, and this is how most people remain in their evil forever.
This external world can help you, but not in the ways the world has taught you. Everything you need can be found in silence and self-awareness–within yourself. The outer world offers horror and evil and all kinds of pressure, and if you realize the pressure is giving you an opportunity to see more about yourself and reality, you will realize the evil in the world is actually helping you grow stronger.
